Vest Certification Decoded: What Do BETA 2009, 2018, And ASTM F1937 Really Mean?

Sep 14, 2025

For body protectors, certification is the objective measure of their protective capability. The BETA (British Equestrian Trade Association) standard is widely recognized. It has two levels: Level 1 (pink label) offers lower protection for low-risk situations, while Level 3 (black and blue label) provides the highest level of protection for cross-country and high-risk riding. The BETA 2018 standard is an update, featuring more rigorous testing on the protectors' ability to absorb energy from a crushing force, better simulating a horse's kick or a fall onto a rock.

The ASTM F1937 standard is specific to inflatable air vests. This certification tests the entire system: its triggering mechanism, inflation time, pressure retention, and overall effectiveness in reducing impact forces on a test dummy. It verifies that the vest deploys correctly and provides a measurable level of protection.

Choosing certified gear is non-negotiable. A BETA Level 3 certified foam vest ensures a baseline of constant protection. An ASTM F1937 certified air vest confirms its airbag system performs as advertised. These labels are your guarantee that the product has passed independent, scientific safety tests, moving it from being mere apparel to being verified safety equipment. Always look for the label.
