What Is Anti-Stab Clothing? What Are The Grades Of It ?

Global Anti-Stab Protection Standards and Classifications

Different countries and regions have established varying test standards to evaluate stab resistance (against blades) and spike resistance (against pointed objects). Below are the mainstream anti-stab protection classifications worldwide:

1. International Standards (ISO 13998 & EN 388)

European Standard EN 388:2016 + A1:2018 (for cut and stab-resistant gloves, partially applicable to anti-stab clothing):

Cut Resistance (Level A-F): Measures resistance to slashing (A = weakest, F = strongest).

Stab Resistance (Level P1-P5):

P1: Resists ≤2 joules (J) of puncture force (e.g., light knife stabs).

P2: Resists ≤3 J.

P3: Resists ≤5 J.

P4: Resists ≤10 J.

P5: Resists ≤20 J (e.g., powerful dagger thrusts).

ISO 13998:2019 (specifically for stab-resistant clothing):

Uses kinetic energy (Joules) and blade types (e.g., single-edge knives, spikes) for classification.

2. U.S. Standard (NIJ 0115.00)

NIJ 0115.00 (2022 Update):

Stab Resistance Levels (Level 1-3):

- Level 1: Resists low-energy stabs (e.g., 24J, simulating a weak attack).

- Level 2: Resists medium-energy stabs (e.g., 36J, simulating a strong thrust).

- Level 3: Resists high-energy stabs (e.g., 50J, simulating a professional attack).

Testing Method: Uses standardized blades (e.g., SPIKE 1) at controlled speeds and angles.

3. Chinese Standard (GA 68-2019)

"Police Stab-Resistant Clothing" GA 68-2019:

Stab Resistance Levels (1-3):

- Level 1: Resists ≤24J knife stabs (e.g., common kitchen knives).

- Level 2: Resists ≤36J knife stabs (e.g., daggers).

- Level 3: Resists ≥50J knife stabs (e.g., military bayonets).

Testing Tool: Standardized blades (hardness HRC50-55) at a 45° stabbing angle.

4. UK Standard (HOSDB/CAST)

Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB):

Stab Resistance Levels (KR1-KR3):

- KR1: Resists low-energy stabs (similar to NIJ Level 1).

- KR2: Resists medium-energy stabs (e.g., 36J).

- KR3: Resists high-energy stabs (e.g., 50J).

Testing Method: Simulates real-world attack scenarios (dynamic & static stabs).

5. German Standard (DIN 23477)

Primarily for industrial anti-stab gear, using a Joule-based classification similar to EN 388.

How to Choose Anti-Stab Clothing?

Application: Prisons (spike resistance), counter-terrorism (knife defense), general security (lightweight).

Certification: Prioritize products certified by NIJ, EN 388, or GA 68.

Balance Protection & Mobility: Higher protection levels may reduce comfort.

Important Notes

Stab-Resistant ≠ Cut-Resistant: Anti-stab gear may not prevent slashing (additional cut-resistant layers may be needed).

Material Aging: Fiber-based protection degrades over time.

Testing Variations: Different countries use varying blade standards and energy calculations-cross-check before purchasing.
