NODs Not Included: Why Your Helmet's Mounting System Is A Critical Choice.

Sep 14, 2025

A tactical helmet's primary purpose is to serve as a platform for critical equipment, most notably Night Observation Devices (NODs) or night vision goggles. The mounting system that attaches the NODs to the helmet is therefore a piece of mission-critical hardware, not an accessory. The usage scenario is operations in low-light or no-light conditions, where the secure and stable operation of NODs is paramount.

The two main types are shroud mounts (a bayonet-style attachment) and dovetail mounts (like the Wilcox L4 G24), which offer a more secure and quick-detach connection. The efficacy of a high-quality mount is zero wobble or shift. Any movement of the NODs during use causes image shake, leading to eye strain, disorientation, and reduced effectiveness.

Choosing a mount involves compatibility with your helmet's shroud and your NODs' bridge. It must be made from high-strength materials like aluminum or polymer to withstand the weight and shock. A failing mount under the weight of expensive NODs during a mission is not an option. This small component is a force multiplier for nighttime dominance.
