From Tourniquets To Chest Seals: What Truly Belongs in Your IFAK?

Sep 14, 2025

An Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) is designed for self-administration or by a buddy to treat life-threatening injuries in the field. Its usage scenario is trauma care under fire, and its contents are focused on addressing the leading causes of preventable death: massive hemorrhage, tension pneumothorax, and airway obstruction.

The core components are:

Tourniquet (CAT Gen 7): For stopping catastrophic limb bleeding.

Hemostatic Gauze: (e.g., QuikClot): Packed into wounds that tourniquets can't reach.

Chest Seals: (e.g., Hyfin Vent): For treating sucking chest wounds.

Compressed Gauze: For wound packing and general bandaging.

Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA): For airway management.

The efficacy of a properly stocked IFAK is to keep a casualty alive long enough to reach definitive medical care. Choosing components involves selecting proven, reputable brands and ensuring every team member is trained in their use. The kit must be mounted in a consistent, easily accessible location on your gear (e.g., the small of the back on a belt), so a teammate can find it instantly. It's not a general medkit; it's a specialized trauma kit.
