Properly wearing tactical elbow pads is essential for both protection and comfort. An incorrectly worn pad can shift, gap, or chafe, rendering it useless. For pads with an internal pocket system in a combat shirt, the process is simple: ensure the pad is fully inserted into the dedicated sleeve pocket with the hard cap centered directly over the elbow bone (olecranon). For strap-on pads, the technique is more nuanced. Position the hard cap directly on the point of the elbow. The straps should be tightened snugly above and below the elbow joint, but not so tight that they cut off circulation or impede flexion. You should be able to make a full fist and bend your arm without the straps digging in. The pad should not slide more than an inch when you move your arm. Always perform a mobility check-simulate aiming a weapon, climbing, and crawling-to ensure the pads stay in place and allow for a full, natural range of motion.
Core Knowledge:
Proper Positioning: The hard cap must be centered directly over the point of the elbow bone to protect it during impact.
Secure but Not Restrictive: Straps should be tight enough to prevent slippage but must not constrict blood flow or limit the range of motion.
Mobility Check: After donning, perform a full range of motion exercises to ensure the pads stay in place and do not hinder movement.
Integration is Key: Pads that integrate into the clothing via pockets are superior for maintaining correct position during dynamic activity.
