Foam Vs. Air: Which Type Of Body Protector Offers Superior Protection?

Sep 14, 2025

The choice between a traditional foam body protector and an inflatable air vest is a central debate in equestrian safety. Both aim to protect the torso, but their approaches and mechanisms are fundamentally different. Understanding these differences is key to choosing the right protection for your needs.

The usage scenario for both is during riding, but their performance profiles cater to different risk assessments.

Traditional foam protectors, certified under standards like BETA (British Equestrian Trade Association) 2009 or 2018, are made from closed-cell foam panels. These materials are designed to compress upon impact, absorbing and dissipating energy away from the body. Their efficacy is constant; they are always "on" and providing protection from the moment you put them on. They are particularly effective against kicks, crushing, or penetrating injuries (e.g., from a hoof) as well as falls.

Inflatable air vests, on the other hand, are passive until activated. Their protection is event-based. They excel at managing the high-energy, dynamic impacts typical of a fall from height at speed. As discussed, they inflate to create a large airbag that decelerates the body more gradually than foam, reducing peak G-forces on vital organs and the spine. However, they offer no protection against kicks or penetrating objects when not inflated.

Choosing between them isn't necessarily an either/or question. Many serious eventers now wear both: a BETA Level 3 foam vest for constant, all-around protection and an air vest on top for enhanced mitigation of high-energy fall impacts. For a rider primarily concerned with a traumatic fall, an air vest may be the priority. For those in environments with many horses or where kicks are a risk, the foam vest is essential. The best choice is informed by your discipline, risk tolerance, and often, a combination of both technologies for maximum safety.
