"Ballistic" and "blast" protection address two distinct physical phenomena and require different engineering approaches. Ballistic protection is focused on defeating a localized, high-velocity projectile. The goal is to stop a small, focused point of energy from penetrating. Materials are designed for high tensile strength (for soft armor) or extreme hardness (for hard plates) to absorb and dissipate this energy over a small area. Blast protection is focused on mitigating the effects of a diffuse overpressure wave and fragmentation from an explosion. The overpressure wave can cause internal injuries without any penetration. Protection involves using materials and designs that can absorb this diffuse energy and deflect it around the body. Fragmentation protection is similar to ballistic protection but is designed for many small, lower-energy projectitors. Blast suits are therefore bulkier, often using padded, layered materials to create an air gap that dampens the shockwave, combined with fragmentation layers to stop shrapnel. EOD suits are the pinnacle of this technology, designed to protect against both.
