What Are The Protection Grades Of Bulletproof Vests?

Aug 17, 2025

Here are the common ballistic vest ratings and their protective capabilities:

Level I: The lowest protection level, mainly effective against low-velocity handgun rounds such as .22 LR and .38 ACP.

Level IIA: Can stop low-velocity handgun rounds including 9mm and .40 S&W.

Level II: Provides protection against handgun rounds like 9mm and .357 Magnum.

Level IIIA: The most common soft armor rating, capable of stopping .44 Magnum and .357 SIG handgun rounds, frequently used in police vests.

Level III: Typically requires hard armor plates to stop rifle rounds such as 7.62x51mm NATO M80 ball (excluding armor-piercing rounds).

Level III+: Intermediate between Level III and IV, can stop 5.56x45mm NATO M855 steel-core rounds.

Level IV: The highest protection level, also requiring hard armor plates, capable of stopping .30-06 Springfield M2 armor-piercing rounds.

The protective capability of ballistic vests is also related to their materials. Common ballistic materials include Kevlar, ceramics, and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. Generally, higher protection levels offer greater stopping power but also increase weight and thickness.

It's important to note that ballistic vest ratings serve as reference standards only, as actual protection effectiveness can be affected by various factors including ammunition type, shooting distance, and wearing method.

Additionally, there are specialized ballistic vests such as stab-resistant vests that provide both ballistic protection and anti-stab/slash capabilities.
