Natural Balance Or High Performance: Does Your Horse's Hoof Need A Shoe?

Sep 14, 2025

The debate between shod and barefoot horses is ongoing. The usage scenario is key. Horses on soft pastures doing light work may thrive barefoot, which promotes natural hoof mechanism and blood flow. Horses in intense work on hard or rocky ground often need shoes.

Shoes are typically made of steel or aluminum. Their efficacy is to protect the hoof from excessive wear, provide traction on different surfaces (e.g., studs for eventing), and can even correct certain gait abnormalities.

Choosing to shoe is a decision for a professional farrier. They assess the horse's conformation, workload, and hoof quality. A well-fitted shoe follows the natural hoof shape and is nailed precisely to avoid sensitive structures. Whether shod or barefoot, regular trimming every 4-6 weeks is non-negotiable for hoof health. It's not a default choice; it's a therapeutic decision based on individual need.
