IR Strobes And Patches: How Friendly Forces Identify You in The Dark.

Sep 14, 2025

In modern operations, night fighting is common. The challenge is identifying friend from foe in the dark. This is where Infrared (IR) technology comes in. IR strobe lights and reflective patches are visible only through night vision devices. The usage scenario is for positive identification by friendly forces, preventing tragic fratricide incidents.

A small IR strobe light can be attached to a helmet or plate carrier, emitting a coded beacon invisible to the naked eye. Similarly, IR-reflective patches on uniforms or helmets appear bright white through NODs. The efficacy is creating an immediate and clear visual identifier for other equipped friendly units.

Choosing and using this equipment requires strict discipline. The strobe must be turned on only when necessary and its placement must be consistent within a unit to avoid confusion. In a night fight, this small piece of gear is one of the most important for unit safety and coordination.
