Interpretation Of Anti-puncture Suit Standards: What Do KR1 To KR3 Grades Mean?

Sep 09, 2025

The UK Home Office standard is a globally recognized benchmark for classifying stab-resistant body armor. Its ratings, KR1-KR3, provide a clear guide to the level of protection offered. KR1 is the lowest level, tested to resist slashing attacks and low-energy stabs from blades like small knives. KR2 offers increased protection against higher energy stabs and slashes. The highest common level, KR3, is designed to resist high-energy stabs from weapons like hunting knives and bayonets. Each level is tested using a standardized mechanical ram that strikes the armor with a specific blade type at a defined energy level (in Joules). Understanding this classification is crucial for procurement. A corrections officer facing homemade shivs might require a KR1 vest, while a tactical team serving high-risk warrants may need KR3 protection. Selecting the appropriate level ensures adequate safety without unnecessary weight and bulk.

Core Knowledge:

KR1 (Low Energy): Protects against threats like low-energy stabs and slashes from small blades.

KR2 (Medium Energy): Offers protection against more determined attacks with greater energy behind the thrust.

KR3 (High Energy): Designed to stop high-energy, focused attacks from large knives and dedicated thrusting weapons.

Energy Measurement: Protection levels are defined by the kinetic energy (Joules) the armor can withstand from a standardized blade, not just the blade type.
