5-Year Service Life: Most manufacturers recommend replacing soft armor panels after 5 years from the date of manufacture. This is due to the unavoidable environmental degradation of the Aramid or polyethylene fibers from exposure to moisture, UV light, and body salts, even if never used.
Inspect Hard Plates Regularly: Hard armor plates (ceramic, PE) have a longer lifespan (often 5-10 years) but must be inspected frequently for signs of damage. Look for cracks in ceramics, delamination (separation of layers), or deep scratches and warping in polyethylene plates.
Proper Storage: Armor should be stored flat in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Do not store it compressed under heavy objects or in a vehicle's trunk for extended periods, as heat and pressure can accelerate material breakdown.
Cleaning Protocol: Clean only the carrier with mild soap and water. Wipe the surface of hard plates with a damp cloth. Never immerse ballistic panels in water, use harsh chemicals, bleach, or dry cleaning solvents, as these can destroy the protective fibers.
