In stab protection, a proper fit is not about comfort-it is a critical safety requirement. An ill-fitting vest can leave vital areas exposed. To find the correct size, you must take accurate torso measurements. Using a soft tape measure, record the circumference around the chest at the widest point and the length from the clavicle (collarbone) down to just above the navel. Manufacturers provide sizing charts that correlate these measurements to small, medium, large, etc. When you try on the vest, it should feel snug but not constricting. It must fully cover your vital organs: from the clavicle down to the diaphragm, and wrap around the sides to protect under the arms. Raise your arms, twist your torso, and simulate movements you might make on duty. The vest should not ride up excessively or gap open, exposing your sides or lower abdomen. Remember, protection is only guaranteed where the armor covers.
Core Knowledge:
Measure Twice, Buy Once: Use a tailor's tape to get accurate chest and torso length measurements. Do not guess your size.
Coverage is Key: The vest must cover from the collarbone to at least the navel and wrap around to protect the sides under the arms.
Mobility Check: The vest must allow you to perform your job duties-drive, run, grapple-without binding or exposing skin.
Snug Fit: It should fit like a sports jacket: snug to the body to prevent shifting, but not so tight that it inhibits breathing or movement.
